Neuromodulation therapies are becoming more and more sought-after for people with mental health issues who do not respond to traditional intervention. neuroCare has established a global network of clinics and training centres, now in Australia, for professionals interested in EEG Biofeedback and Neurostimulation techniques, proven to have beneficial and sustainable effects in mental health. As advocates for only evidence-based protocols and technologies, neuroCare sees a growing number of professionals in Australia interested in taking part in professional training.

Neuromodulation techniques such as Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and Neurofeedback (EEG Biofeedback) have the benefit that they are non-invasive and can help patients with Depression, OCD, ADHD, without the need for medication. Numerous scientific studies show fast and sustainable effects in these areas, as compared to medications. Patients of neuroCare’s Outpatient Clinic in Sydney, for example, typically spend 2 – 3 months going through an intensive and personalised program, with response rates of around 66% for Depression[1] and 78% for ADHD[2].

In 2018 neuroCare Group Australia established regular training workshops for professionals, led by Dr Trevor Brown, Senior Neuroscientist and Dr Mark Ryan Senior Psychiatrist.  These workshops fall under neuroCare Group Training and Science Division, neuroCademy, founded by leading neuroscientist Dr Martijn Arns in The Netherlands. Course content continues to be supervised by Dr Arns and his research team. The team works closely with Australia’s clinical and training personnel to ensure safe and evidence-based protocols are appropriately carried out in neuroCare Clinics and in Professional Training courses, advocating correct and evidence-based applications of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), EEG Biofeedback (or Neurofeedback) as well as transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS).

neuroCare CSO, Dr Martijn Arns

Over the last decade, Dr Martijn Arns has pioneered the application of neurofeedback in ADHD and insomnia and rTMS in depression and OCD. He is a leading expert on neurofeedback and EEG based personalized medicine in ADHD and depression and has published more than 100 scientific articles (H-index=25) His pioneering expertise on neurofeedback and rTMS has formed the basis of the neuroCare Clinics, which started as “Brainclinics” in 2001. Brainclinics was the first clinic in Europe to offer Outpatient TMS, pioneering its integration with Psychotherapy.  Brainclinics Education (now neuroCademy Training & Science) began in 2006 as a way to educate fellow clinicians in the correct and appropriate application of either Neurofeedback and TMS. In 2018 these workshops are now delivered worldwide in 4 languages. Dr Arns will be visiting Australia in October 2018 to take part in delivering the 4-day Neurofeedback Course, a stepping stone for practitioners interested in gaining BCIA accreditation (Biofeedback Certification International Alliance).

neuroCare expertise now in Australia

In 2017 neuroCare welcomed to the team Dr Trevor Brown, experienced researcher and neuroscientist (and former Olympian in Table Tennis!). As Senior Neuroscientist for neuroCare’s operations in Australia, Trevor oversees the professional training and therapy delivery in neuroCare clinics. Trevor performs QEEG and ERP analysis and co-manages neuromodulation services, including Neurofeedback, tDCS and (repetitive) Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS).  Working closely with Dr Arns in The Netherlands, Trevor has an ongoing collaboration with neuroCare’s research teams in Europe.

All workshops are co-presented by Sydney Psychiatrist Dr Mark Ryan, who has extensive clinical experience in incorporating neuromodulation techniques (i.e. TMS, tDCS, Neurofeedback) for the treatment of Depression, OCD, ADHD, Insomnia and other sleep-related co-morbidities.

Dr Trevor Brown presents at the AADPA (Australian ADHD Professionals Association) Conference in 2018. Here he demonstrated the scientific evidence for Neurofeedback as a safe and sustainable therapy option for children and adults with ADHD
neuroCare Psychiatrist Dr Mark Ryan presents at the ANSA (Applied Neuroscience Society of Australasia) in Brisbane in 2018. Dr Ryan is particularly focused on addressing sleep issues in mental health, concurrent with neuromodulation therapies (e.g. TMS, Neurofeedback)

Supervision for a range of Neuromodulation techniques

TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation)
neuroCare Clinics are well-regarded providers of  Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) combined with Psychotherapy (different from monotherapy TMS). This is a short-term therapy option for people who suffer from Depression or OCD who have not been helped by the traditional management of their symptoms. (In Australia TMS is a recommended therapy for patients who have not responded to two or more antidepressant medications, RANZCP Position Statement on TMS -2014 )

neuroCare Group Australia also runs a 2-day TMS Workshop outlining the history and theoretical components of TMS giving course participants practical hands-on training with certified devices. A further component of this workshop is to demonstrate the improved response in 66% of patients when TMS is combined with Psychotherapy [1] This workshop is suited to Psychiatrists, Psychologists and similar healthcare professionals. tDCS (transcranial Direct Current Stimulation
Numerous research papers show the benefits of transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) for the treatment of various neurological disorders. tDCS now has gained ‘Level B’ evidence for treatment of Depression, Fibromyalgia and addiction. There is also emerging evidence for its application in Neuropathic Pain in the lower limbs, Motor Stroke, Aphasia, Schizophrenia (acoustic hallucinations) and migraine [2].

neuroCare runs a 1-day workshop for therapists and researchers who are interested in understanding more about this technique. This workshop covers the technical and neurophysiological theory and offers and overview of the state of research, presenting a rationale for why tDCS is uesd in certain conditions and the evidence-base for its application. Participants also gain familiarity of tDCS in practice with a particular focus on safety aspects in device configuration.

Neurofeedback (EEG Biofeedback)
In recent years research into EEG Biofeedback, also called ‘Neurofeedback’, has gained widespread recognition in the scientific community as a safe and sustainable method for helping children and adults with ADHD and sleep problems. Dr Arns and the neuroCare engineering team in Europe have developed a range of equipment and standard protocols deemed safe and backed by leading scientific papers. Neurofeedback protocols of Slow Cortical Potentials (SCP), Sensory Motor Rhythm (SMR) Neurofeedback and Theta/Beta Neurofeedback training, all demonstrate benefit when correctly administered and informed by Quantitative EEG, with Dr Arns research showing a response in 78% of patient cases of ADHD[3]. These methods, including the safe and evidence-based application of Neurofeedback, is outlined in a special 4-day Course approved by the worldwide governing body for Biofeedback training (the Biofeedback Certification International Alliance (BCIA)). Participants in this workshop gain 36 didactic credits towards their certification. Click here for more details on our 4-day Neurofeedback for ADHD and Insomnia Workshop held in Sydney)

SCP (Slow Cortical Potentials) Neurofeedback
neuroCare also has the expertise and technology to demonstrate the specific protocol of Slow Cortical Potentials (SCP) Neurofeedback.  This is a standardised protocol, already widely recognised in Europe as a safe and sustainable way to train self-regulation in children and adults with ADHD. In 2017 a large multicentre study was published on the effects of SCP Neurofeedback in children with ADHD. The results stand as the strongest level of evidence and demonstrate the feasibility of Neurofeedback as compared to medications for ADHD [4](Professionals interested in learning more about this technique are advised to call neuroCare Education Coordinator on (02) 8317 5304)

All courses are designed for participants to gain the essentials in getting started with neuromodulation techniques in their own practice. While official training programs are regularly available in Sydney, one-on-one supervision with neuroCare’s training team can be arranged by request.

*neuroCare only considers the following Neurofeedback protocols to be evidence-based and appropriate for clinical intervention: Slow Cortical Potentials (SCP) Neurofeedback, Sensory Motor Rhythm (SMR) Neurofeedback, Theta/Beta Training).

State-of-the-art facilities in Sydney CBD

neuroCare Group Australia’s Head Office and pilot clinic in Sydney’s CBD has become an ideal location for professionals to gain practical experience with neuro-technologies.  The conference room seats up to 14 participants, with participants given access to the clinic and a range of technologies to use within the hands-on component of the workshop.

All workshops are “device agnostic” and at least 2 different TMS, Biofeedback or tDCS technologies can be demonstrated. While all workshops are designed to allow participants enough hands-on practical training to start in their own clinical setting, ongoing supervision can also be organised with one of the trainers.

neuroCare Australia has now announced dates for workshops in 2019. These workshops are listed below, with further details of each course on the website. Registration in all workshops can be booked directly online. Student discounts are available upon request.
